Early in April 2014 we started laying out beds and designing the space surrounding the house. This is an experimental year, so we're planting many varieties, mostly things that we love ourselves. This is our very first planting of the season.
Last year we planted 100 Casablanca Lillies to test the amount of care we would need to successfully grow these gorgeous flowers on our land. We lost a few bulbs from natural causes and we lost a few more to our furry friends (deer and rabbits) who share the surrounding area. A total loss of about 15%.
This year we acquired about 150 seedlings, Colorado blue spruce, white spruce and Douglas fir, white oak, Japanese maple, and a few apple and pear trees from the Berrien County Conservation District. We also ordered a number of other species from various online seed and container plant sources. This consisted of at least four variations of lilies, and over 300 Casablanca lilies specifically. Included in our first planting of the season are lavender, dalhias, peonies, zinnias and poppies.
Our lilies are at all different heights in just a month and we're happy some are staggered naturally so we can deliver them at different times versus all at once! :)
